Yuck, Seedcorn Maggot in the Favas

I've been wondering why the none of the favas that I planted on November 23 have started to poke their little heads above the soil yet. After all, the weather has been pretty nice for most of the last 2 weeks, at least during the day. The soil is neither too wet nor too cold. So, impatient gardener that I am, I started poking around. Much to my dismay, I found a number of the seeds to be maggot infested. Look what they did to my poor seeds:

I went to the place where I nearly always go first when trying to diagnose a plant problem, UC IPM Online, and figured out that the problem is most likely Seedcorn Maggots. It looks like my best solution for now is to replant with pregerminated seeds.

I hope that the next round of seeds will produce more of this:

  1. I've bookmarked that website - it might be useful. Good luck with the second sowing of beans!

  3. Ugh. Maggots are up there with snails and cockroaches in the category of "why in the world was this creature ever created?!"
