Snowy Santa Lucia Mountain Range

Here's my contribution to all the posts about the first snow of the year. Granted, it's not in my back yard, nor even in my neighborhood, but it is within sight of my garden.

Snow dusted peaks in the Santa Lucia range.

The nearest peak, the name of which I haven't figured out yet, is about 8 miles away as the crow flies. Those peaks are all over 2000 feet high. I have to admit, I prefer experiencing the snow at a distance.

  1. So lovely! Here in Maine, we've watched a foot of snow fall today. It has been a gorgeous scene, but then comes the shoveling...sigh.

I love your frosty shots and swathed plants...ethereal. I envy your zone, though I do have fun trying to stretch my season as far as possible.

So happy to have found your wonderful blog. I'll be following...

  2. Nice mountain shot, I like all the grey tones. It would be nice to have snow at a distance. We have yet to have much, barely a dusting last night and then rain so it is all gone. It is getting quite nasty though, lots of rain and wind and cold... yuck!

  3. That's about as close as I like to see snow too! We have mountains about the same distance away, maybe a bit further, which have snow in winter, but not yet.

  4. June, Welcome! I read your blog for the first time the other day also. Loved the chicken poop and chopsticks... I'll back your way again also.

A foot of snow, whew! Reading garden blogs from snowy parts makes me appreciate my zone more than ever.

  5. Dan, It looks so cold when it's so gray. Actually, the snow didn't show up well when it was sunny, I had to wait for clouds and the end of the day to take the photo. We've got rain on the way, the paper said the "storm gates" are open.

  6. Chaiselongue, this is actually the earliest I've seen the snow on the peaks, but then, I've only been here 3 years.

  7. Ah, well, if we'd had rain, we might have had some snow on Mnt Hamilton. But it's been so dry, it didn't really get very impressive. Nice shot!

  8. Hi Michele, you certainly have a lovely view. Great shots. It's warmer here in southern California. I live three miles from the beach, but have no view at all. If I go to the beach though, I can see snow on the Santa Ana Mountains. And that's where it belongs. Way up there at 5,600 ft, not down here where I am.And yet it's all in Orange County, beach to peak.

  9. It's terribly difficult to look at mountain peaks and then to the map and work out which is which! Lovely photo!

  10. Lou, Those peaks dive down to the sea along Big Sur, surf to snow you could say. That's one of the joys of living in California, there is such a diversity of landscapes and climates in this state. I would hate to be a weather forcaster here, drive 10 miles and the climate and weather changes!

  11. Jan, My husband and I have sat out in front with a topo map and a compass. We just can't figure it out. Great explorers we would be, ha!

  12. I agree with you about the "snow at a distance". My husband and I could see snow on the mountains just east of Salinas a few days ago. The neighbors and I have had sheets on the citrus lately...
