Harvest Monday - December 23, 3013

The harvests have been pretty typical for late December - not a lot.

I got a nice handful of shoots from the fall planting of Di Ciccio broccoli. The agribon that I had covered the plants with for bird protection had the beneficial effect of providing enough protection through the recent freezing nights to keep the shoots from being damaged. I chopped these up and sautéed them with a chopped up giant scallion (not tallied), garlic, and pine nuts.

Also harvested but not tallied were some thinnings from the carrot patch. At least they are colorful! One more harvest that was tallied but not photographed (see last week's post) was more celery.

Unbelievable unseasonal weather. It has been warm and sunny most days. We had a foggy day and a cloudy day. I was sitting inside one afternoon and heard a strange sound, I couldn't figure out what it was. Wind? No. Animals on the roof? No. Holy cow, those are big fat raindrops! I didn't recognize the sound of rain, it's been so rare this year. Unfortunately, it just spat on us for a moment, not even enough to wash away the dust and smoke.

Lots of smoke from the Pfeiffer Ridge fire in Big Sur just 15 miles as the crow files in that direction. That's unseasonal also, we can usually relax at this time of year and not worry too much about the danger of wild fires. But you can see how dry the landscape remains, look at all that tinder dry grass on my hillside. It's usually turning a nice wintry (for us) shade of emerald green by now.

It  wasn't very pleasant breathing all that smoke, especially as I sank into the depths of a nasty cold.

It did, however, make for some spectacular sunsets.

A high price to pay for all those who lost homes in Big Sur, my heart goes out to them.

Anyway, here's the harvests for the past week:

Di Ciccio broccoli - 12.4 oz.
Dorato d'Asti celery - 5.6 oz.
A couple more heads of Red Janice garlic from bunch - 2 oz.

Wow, that's a whopping 1 lb., 4 oz. for the the week!
And the total for the year so far is - 977 lb., 7.2 oz. (no complaints)

Harvest Monday is hosted by Daphne on her blog Daphne's Dandelions, head on over there to see what other garden bloggers have been harvesting lately.

  3. Egads. It is so strange to have fires in the winter. House fires, sure, but not wildfires.

Thank you for sharing your garden with everyone. Happy Holidays!
