How odd that you should get Dungeness crabs over there, when you are thousands of miles away from Dungeness...Mark Willishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04558305122821209520noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-439775590468820468.post-16519111437761460892014-12-06T07:45:20.260-08:002014-12-06T07:45:20.260-08:00I'll have to keep an eye out for crab meal, so...I'll have to keep an eye out for crab meal, sounds like a wonderful amendment. We are so far from the ocean, I'm not surprised I haven't seen any - it took some searching even to find kelp meal (which I use to boost potassium).Margarethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15949946977793864054noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-439775590468820468.post-1380930165180484712014-12-05T17:32:33.452-08:002014-12-05T17:32:33.452-08:00They do take forever to compost, unlike fish bones...They do take forever to compost, unlike fish bones and heads which I do put in the compost bin where they seem to magically disappear. I prefer to grind up the crab shells and put them directly in the soil, it's no different than the stuff that I buy and it is a great slow release fertilizer.Michellehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07812702328134261533noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-439775590468820468.post-8086968917073410912014-12-05T15:59:02.460-08:002014-12-05T15:59:02.460-08:00Wow, wish I got crab in my CSF. Lobster is the big shellfish item on this coast and Coast of Maine makes a lobster compost I buy every year. I don't think they grind the shells, but the composting process does take at least 9 months. It really does seem to promote more growth and productivity. It made a noticeable difference in the peppers. The poor peppers always seem to get infected with something that makes the leaves small, a virus probably, and I usually have problems with sunburn on the mature peppers. I'm trying to increase N, P and Ca and the chitin sounded like an added bonus as well. I just sent off a soil sample today for a basic + trace elements test, and I hope to add any amendments soon based on those results. Do you put the mycorhizal innoculant in all your beds? I'm looking to experiment with Dave @ HappyAcreshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03441364543023807886noreply@blogger.com
