I grew up in St. Louis which had a lot of cafeterias. That was a standard cafeteria item (steak houses as well, but I was a poor college student) and I selected it a lot. When I grow romaine in my garden, I usually just select the outer leaves and add them to the lettuce mix. Maybe I should give Sweetie Baby a try.David Veltenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07710293718143454000noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-439775590468820468.post-72186957080544572612015-01-14T22:23:52.381-08:002015-01-14T22:23:52.381-08:00I'm going to try Winter Density this year. It is a lovely lettuce for sure. The only romaine type I usually grow is Winter Density which is pretty winter hardy here, though nice in spring and fall too. Renee's does have some tasty selections, and I always look forward to seeing what varieties they choose to offer. I don't know what my problem is. My spring lettuce tends to bolt before it gets to full size and fall lettuce never seems to bulk up in time. Summer - well forget it. Maybe I'm growing the wrong varieties. In any case, I would love to be able to grow a decent head of romaine one of these days. I'm doing that now with Ruby Gem romaine, another small lettuce, similar in size to Sweetie Baby but with red leaves.Michellehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07812702328134261533noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-439775590468820468.post-78267651180851208402015-01-14T13:58:08.290-08:002015-01-14T13:58:08.290-08:00I still have a very hard time getting rid of exces...I still have a very hard time getting rid of excess seedlings. Sometimes my logic wins, but more often than not, the seedling does.

Sweetie Baby sounds wonderful - especially the "stays sweet until the flower stalk comes up" part. I much prefer harvesting leaves rather than entire heads & did this successfully this past summer with both a romaine & Batavian lettuce Margarethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15949946977793864054noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-439775590468820468.post-39953233431113662852015-01-14T13:34:12.857-08:002015-01-14T13:34:12.857-08:00Deer's Tongue.Deer's Tongue.Lou Murrayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00225657923458384758noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-439775590468820468.post-36157715619099365232015-01-14T13:33:29.393-08:002015-01-14T13:33:29.393-08:00My favorite lettuce is Simpson Elite, followed by ...My favorite lettuce is Simpson Elite, followed by Red Sails and Speckled Trout (aka Forellenschuss?).
