One More Un-Vegetable Post

Maybe I should amend the subtitle to my blog to include frequent forays into the un-vegetable garden.

I've been trying to take some half decent photos of the tree dahlia ever since it started to bloom. Yikes, what a challenge, the blossoms are waving around about 12 feet off the ground. My tree dahlia is a runt since it's growing in a pot. The last one I had that was growing in the ground was about 20 feet high. Try taking a shot straight up into the sky, getting the correct exposure is almost impossible - at least with my camera and photographic skills.

Today I got a 6 foot ladder out and took about 50 different shots. Thank goodness for digital cameras. So, could be better, but here they are:

Here's the dahlia showing above the top of the 6 foot ladder.

A little closer....

A little closer still...

As close as I could get. Hi Mr. Bumble Bee!

  1. Never heard of a tree dahlia! Pretty nifty. Ours never get bigger than 6-7 ft. up here, at least that I've seen, since they die back to the ground every year. Must be a warm climate only thing, yours. I think the photos turned out great!

  3. Karen, thanks. They typically die nearly to the ground here also, and I cut it down to the ground anyway after it blooms. I think they aren't really grown in colder climates because they don't start blooming until November.

Tyra, I've never looked to see if they set seeds. They are typicaly grown from stem cuttings, if you can call them that. The stem I got from a friend was over 12 inches long and about 2 inches in diameter! I'll check for seeds this year and let you know.

  6. Hi Michelle,
Thanks for visiting me a couple of days ago. I don't think I've ever left you a message...I just can't remember! I've read your page before but it doesn't look like I left a comment, so I thought I'd say hi. You are an amazing gardener and cook. I know nothing about cooking...I'm lazy that way. Looking at your recipes and the special care you give everything gives me a new perspective...although I don't think I'm personally up to the challenge:)

    Take care! Jan
