Harvest Monday - May 31, 2010


That's the harvest from last Friday, one last Azur Star kohlrabi that was hidden under the floppy fava foliage, a few strawberries, Piracicaba shoots, Sugar Magnolia purple snap peas, and some basil. I also pulled out a couple of fava plants yesterday to make way for a planting of pole beans. If it weren't for the favas the harvest total would be much lower than usual since I didn't cook much last week. And not included in the totals below are 4 heads of garlic, 3 of which were roasted and smeared on toast as an appetizer, yum.

The week before last I harvested a lot of beets, enough to fill 3 quart jars with pickles and still have leftovers. Here's a picture of one of the jars of pickles that I opened this weekend to sample, it's almost half gone now. . .  This jar is a mix of Chioggia and Golden beets, the other jars each contain a single variety of beet.


Here's the harvest tally for the last week:

Piracicaba broccoli - 12.5 ounces
Capers - 1.25 ounces
Fava beans - 4 lb. 9 oz.
Azur Star kohlrabi - 11 ounces
Sugar Magnolia Purple snap peas - 5.75 oz (plus a few eaten in the garden)
Strawberries - 13 oz.

Total for the week - 7 lb. 4 oz
Total for the year - 212 lb. 11.25 oz.

  1. You've really managed to miss the "famine" part of the harvest. As usual, I missed my planting window for some things and have fallow beds -- not what I'd planned!

    The kohlrabi looks good, and the peas are lovely.

    Your harvest is full with color, as always. I love the purple fruit!

  5. Nice, finding a surprise kohlrabi under the favas. I've only been finding surprise burrows under my favas :-)

    I'll have to try this picabia broccoli, it looks attractive for our climate.

    I love your yellow table, nice backdrop for the color in the harvest.

  6. I've never eaten pickled beets before. Are they sour or sweet?

    I sampled some more piracicaba shoots raw this morning. The little florets are perfectly mild but the stems are what is tasting a bit bitter. I don't understand it. I noticed though that the broccoli plants producing at the moment are a bit stunted in growth. maybe that has something to do with it.

  7. Ah pickled beets. Sounds wonderful. I haven't grown kholrabi in ages. It was a good coldframe/cellaring plant.

  8. All of the harvest looks good, but the strawberries are what had my eye immediately! They look delicious and I am Jonesing for some fresh berries.

  9. Beautiful harvest, love the color combination.
    I'm growing some Piracicaba now, they are getting pretty big but no head yet, I think I planted them a little too close. Oh well, live and learn, there's always something new.

  10. I wish I had some Piracicaba broccoli coming in right now. My plants are all so tiny right now, even the other broccoli.
