Harvest Monday - January 10, 2011

No mug shots of garden veggies this week, but that doesn't mean that I didn't harvest anything. A couple of the usual suspects made their way to the kitchen. Here's the lineup:

Romanesco broccoli - 14 oz.
Golden Chard - 1 lb., 8 oz.

The total harvests for the year are up to 2 lb., 15 oz.

All the Romanesco is maturing early this season. I typically count on harvesting the summer sown plants around February. But I harvested the first head on December 6 and that was too mature and could have been harvested a week or two earlier. The second head was rounded up on January 2 and was harvested a bit late also. And a third head is looking like it's time to bring it in so I need to harvest it before it gets out of hand. There's one more plant  left with a small head developing, I hope that it will be ready some time closer to February...

I still had about a pound of the first head left in the refrigerator (thank goodness it keeps really well). That went into a batch of Spiced Romanesco Broccoli Soup. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with head #2 that's spending time in the cooler now but I'll have to figure out its fate soon so that head #3 can take its place.

  1. Boy, that soup sounds wonderful! "The Italian" would just love it!! I'm going to have to copy your recipe.

    This is the first year I've actually harvested something this early. I picked about a half pound of mustard, kale and rape from our cold frames. Truth be told we could never keep up with all the fine veggies you harvest!

  3. Yum~~the spicy broccoli soup sounds good, I'll have to wait until next harvest, going out of town tomorrow.

  4. Heads on my broccoli are so small that if I harvested 3 of them, they would have to be used all in one meal.

  5. Yum. That reminds me I have to start eating the chard in the freezer. I haven't yet. I miss having fresh chard.

  6. Our fall broccoli crop all matured extra early this year too. Not sure what was up with that but it sounds like we were not alone in that.
