Harvest Monday - March 11, 2013

It was mostly the same stuff from the garden this week. I'm not complaining, it's all been fresh and delicious.

Loads of Golden Corn Salad.
It's been salad for lunch and/or dinner almost every day.

More Golden and Flamingo chard (and a bit of cilantro too).

I used this bunch to make a dish of baked Gigante beans with tomatoes (home canned), leeks (farmer's market) and the chard.

The Tronchuda Beira cabbage demonstrated why it's called "bolting" when leafy plants decide to flower. The buds went from barely there to this in about three weeks. So it went from what you see above to what you see below in mere minutes.

I blanched the sprouts and used most of them in a frittata with bacon, cheese, onions, peeled fava beans from my freezer stash, and dried cherry tomatoes. A wedge of frittata was great for lunch on the trail this weekend when we hiked in the Pinnacles National Park (it just got promoted from Monument to Park- yeah!). (We saw 8 Condors!!)

Here's the harvests for the past week:

Dorato di Asti celery - 8.8 oz.
Flamingo chard - 7.9 oz.
Golden chard - 8.1 oz.
Tronchuda Beira cabbage - 1 lb., 7.6 oz.
Golden Corn Salad - 2 lb., 6.8 oz.

The total harvests for the week were - 5 lb., 7.2 oz.
Which brings the harvests totals for the year up to - 16 lb., 10 oz.

Harvest Monday is hosted by Daphne on her blog Daphne's Dandelions, head on over there to see what other garden bloggers have been harvesting lately.

  2. Yum - I'm trying that Tronchuda kale but having a hard time getting them to germinate. It all looks so good, can't wait till our autumn hits and we can have harvests like this.

    1. I haven't tried the cilantro roots yet. I've seen recipes for curry paste that use the roots, but I don't know how else they might be used.

  8. Once my snow melts I may try to pick some of the golden corn salad that overwintered. I've never had it before.

  10. I am very envious of that beautiful corn salad. My hens got into my fall planted patch and unfortunately it took a real beating and did not bounce back. I love it's buttery texture and flavor and it is so nice as a salad when everything else is too early to harvest yet.
