Harvest Monday - February 3, 2014

Not much to report by way of harvests this week, but look what we started the day with yesterday - a rainbow!

And you know what a rainbow means - rain! All of .55 inches (1.4 cm) which doesn't sound like much, but it's the most rain we've had in one day in over a year. There's a chance for a bit more later this week (insert happy dance here).

So, back to business - there's more of the same coming from the garden. A number of celery stalks, of which this is just a few harvested last week.

A few more carrots for my almost daily lunch salads.

This is a scallion, but what's not obvious from the photo is that it is the length of my arm and weighs over a pound. This was a hanger-on from last year that I pulled out when I cleaned out one of the beds last week - I'm not including it in the harvest tally.

More celery and Di Ciccio broccoli. I've been removing the larger leaves from the broccoli shoots and using them in fritattas. Lately, my favorite way to prepare the shoots is to steam them in a saute pan with just a bit of water, by the time the shoots are cooked most of the water is evaporated, then I finish them with some hazelnut oil and honey viognier vinegar, a pinch of salt and a grind of pepper.  Simply delicious!

I also found some cilantro hiding under the row cover that's protecting the broccoli from the birds, but it wasn't enough to include in the tally. Normally I would be inundated with cilantro at this time of the year, but the birds have so little greenery to eat in the natural landscape that they are eating nearly anything green in my garden. The only green things that are not tasty to them are the celery leaves and the alliums. It's strange that they won't eat the celery, but the celeriac leaves were starting to disappear.

Back to the weather, the week started off unseasonably warm and dry but then slid down to more seasonable temps and, hallelujah, rain!

Here's the harvests for the past week:

Di Ciccio broccoli - 1 lb., 4.5 oz.
Circus Circus carrots - 2.2 oz.
Sugarsnax carrots - 1.6 oz.
Dorato D'Asti celery - 9 oz.

The harvest totals for the past week came to - 2 lb., 1.3 oz.
Which brings the total harvests for 2014 up to 12 lb., 11.1 oz. (5.75 kg)

Harvest Monday is hosted by Daphne on her blog Daphne's Dandelions, head on over there to see what other garden bloggers have been harvesting lately.

  1. Beautiful harvest again this week, I wish I could grow your variety of veggies this time of year. We are usually stuck with only two or three things this time of year.

  2. Love the way you prepare your broccoli shoots, simple, elegant and tasty.

  3. Sounds like the birds are getting desperate. We occasionally get bird attacks on our greens, but it isn't regular. Just the weeds around here grow so well they have plenty of greens where ever they look. But then again we get rain.

  4. I never seem to be able to grow decent celery. Usually the ones I grow end up hollow inside. I'm guessing it's because I'm waiting too long to harvest it.
