Harvest Monday - March 16, 2015

Just back from a week of hiking around Moab, Utah. One of my favorite hikes was in the Needles section of Canyonlands National Park, we did the Cheslar Park loop where you get to walk through and around landscapes like the one shown below. There's a lot of fascinating things to see in the Moab area including 112 million year old dinosaur tracks and Native American rock art dating back a few thousand years.

Anyway, back to the garden. I didn't get around to doing a harvest post for last Monday so this post features two weeks of harvests. The harvests didn't amount to a lot because I was trying to get through what was already in the fridge before we left and I wasn't around to harvest anything until we got home yesterday afternoon.

But before we left I cut down another of the bolting Lacinato kale plants.

And I pulled the remaining turnips. The tops were a bit tired and I didn't have time to cook them before we left so I chopped them up, laid the on the soil where the turnips had been, then covered them with newspaper. Those will get turned into the soil later this week.

Here's a bunch of goodies that went into a salad before we left.

Spanish Black carrots, Dorato D'Asti celery, spring onions, Cilician parsley, Romanesco fennel
Other than what is shown I harvested more goodies for a salad yesterday but didn't photograph them.

Here's the harvests for the past two weeks:

Spanish Black carrots - 4.5 oz.
Dorato D'Asti celery - 1 lb., 2.5 oz.
Romanesco fennel - 13.9 oz.
Lacinato kale - 1 lb., 15.3 oz.
Michelle batavian lettuce - 15.1 oz.
Spring onions - 5.7 oz.
Mikado turnips - 2 lb., 5.1 oz.

Two week total - 7 lb., 14.1 oz.
2015 to date - 78 lb., 1.8 oz.

Harvest Monday is hosted by Daphne on her blog Daphne's Dandelions, head on over there to see what other garden bloggers have been harvesting lately.

  3. The trips sounds fun. Canyonlands is still on my bucket list, and I know my wife and I would both enjoy it. I'd say that was a nice harvest given the season.

I'm so looking forward to some more exciting salads, like yours - though it will be quite a while before they are available.

  5. I loving travels that include historically significant sights - never been to Canyonlands but it looks like a fascinating vacation spot. And that salad must have been as delicious as it was beautiful.
