Harvest Monday - January 18, 2010
It's still slow in the garden now so there's not much to show for Harvest Monday. There's the carrot harvest shown above, from left to right Afghani Purple, Dhagestan White (some are yellowish), and Early Scarlet Horn. A few of them are rather good looking, and the rest are, well, only a gardener could love the look of them! All have been equally delicious. A few of them were used in open faced sandwiches of toasted country bread generously spread with hummus topped with grated carrot drizzled with a bit of good olive oil and sprinkled with roasted salted sunflower seeds. Some more went into a vegetable soup with extra chickpeas from the hummus. And a few are left in the fridge. The chickens got the tops. I've been weighing the carrots without the tops, I wonder if I should include those in the harvest also?
Here's the harvest totals for the past week:
Afghani Purple carrots - 7 oz.
Early Scarlet Horn carrots - 9 oz.
Daghestan White carrots - 6.25 oz.
Olive Leaf Rapini (trimmed) - 7.25 oz.
Cutting Celery - 2.75 oz.
Week total - 32.25 oz. or 2.02 pounds
Total to date - 6.34 pounds
Our host for Harvest Mondays is Daphne, please visit her blog Daphne's Dandelions to see what other garden bloggers have been harvesting. Perhaps you'll join in and show us what you've been harvesting as well!

That is a lovely picture of a carrot rainbow on that colourful table cloth. I have no carrots right now. They don't do super well in my polytunnel and this year we had to take it down due to big garden renos expected next year.
ReplyDeleteThey look great, and as usual a very nice picture. I was just making a recipe list and shopping list for the week and realized that I don't necessarily have to buy carrots, unless I want to wait for the garden ones to fatten up. . .
ReplyDeleteI'm excited to grow cosmic purple carrots this year...although my orange varieties are proving pretty reliable.
ReplyDeleteI think I'll add some more soil to my raised beds this spring in order to get my carrot to look a bit less knobby. I didn't do a very good job of double digging last year.
That open faced sandwich sounds simple and delicious!
I have never seen purple carrots! Do they have the same taste as orange ones?
ReplyDeleteI love your carrot rainbow. Very pretty. I actually like seeing one or two weirdly shaped carrots. They always make me smile - at least outside in the garden. In the kitchen I'm not as amused.
ReplyDeleteThe purple carrots look great - do they taste the same as orange ones? And your hummus open sandwiches sound delicious! One of my favourite kind of lunch dishes.
ReplyDeleteLove purple carrots. I grew dragon carrots a couple years ago and will grow them again this year. They are purple skinned though with orange flesh. Are yours purple throughout?
ReplyDeleteOttawa Gardener, Thanks! Hopefully your garden renos will make for easier winter gardening.

Stefaneener, Isn't it great when you can cross things off your shopping lists because you're growing you own. Love it!

Thomas, I grew the Cosmic Purples last year and liked them. They did well, although they did have more of a tendency to bolt than some of the other varieties I grew. I do love having a variety of colors.
---
Vrtlarica, The purple ones taste like the orange ones to me, maybe not as sweet as the sweetest orange varieties, but I'm ok with that, I don't need my carrots to be super sweet.
---
Daphne, the odd shapes are fun to look at and so long as I don't need perfect carrot sticks I don't mind them for cooking, although they may be more difficult to clean at times.
---
chaiselongue, The purples do taste pretty much the same as the orange ones. They were good on the hummus sandwiches.
Dan, The Afghan Purples are orange on the inside, if you peel them you lose all the purple.
What a pretty array of colors. I love the background pattern in the picture too.
ReplyDeleteGood harvest for the week.
Sounds like some delicious carrot recipes!
ReplyDeleteNice carrots, we have been trying to grow more colorful carrots as well. I was surprised at how flavorful the white ones we grew were. I like your sandwich idea, I would have never thought to use a carrot that way.
ReplyDeletekitsapFG, The background is actually a ceramic glazed lava stone table top. I love that thing for laying out the veggies and taking photos.

Melinda, thanks! Carrots are such a versatile veggie...

Mr. H., it is fun to grow different colored carrots. And the different colors have different nutritients as well. The sandwich is also good with sprouts, sunflower sprouts are a favorite around here.
