Harvest Monday - May 10, 2010

Here's what came from the garden yesterday, colorful Azur Star purple kohlrabi, one head of butterhead lettuce, and a handful of fava beans for grilling. I julienned one of the kohlrabi along with an apple and dressed it with the mustard vinaigrette from Deborah Madison's book Vegetarian Cooking For Everyone. The kohlrabi were large but still crisp and tender, not at all woody. I saved the kohlrabi leaves, they can be cooked like kale, so the harvest weight shown below includes the leaves.


The first head of Romanesco Natalino matured, it was actually a bit too mature but it was still tasty baked in a gratin with manchego cheese and almonds.


It was another big week for fava beans. I cut down all the plants that I sowed back on November 11. I got almost 30 more pounds of beans from them. Thirty-nine plants produced about 100 pounds of beans. There are still about 2 dozen plants left that I sowed on December 20. They are full of mature and maturing beans that I've decided to leave to dry, although I picked a few yesterday to grill as an easy appetizer. Now that the most of the favas are done the weekly harvest weights should drop considerably!

Here's the harvest totals for the past week:

Piracicaba broccoli - 11.5 oz.
Fava Beans - 31 lb., 3 oz.
Garlic Scapes - 1.25 oz.
Azur Star kohlrabi - 9 lb., 9.5 oz. (7 lb., 3 oz. of bulbs)
Butterhead lettuce - 1 lb., 4.25 oz.
Cimarron romaine lettuce - 11 oz.
Romanesco Natalino - 12 oz.
Strawberries - 4.5 oz.
10 eggs

The total for the week was 36 lb., 12.25 oz.
The total for the year is 181 lb., 10 oz.

  1. I never would have guessed the kohlrabi was as large as it was except for the head of lettuce sitting next to it. Those are huge.

  3. I just love the purple color of those kohlrabi plants. I have only green ones growing and now it’s too late to sow purple. I will sow them in the fall.
    Beans really can produce!

  5. Kohlrabi looking great ! (Didn't know the leaves were edible too). That's quite an amazing fava bean harvest so far. You sure have a productive garden. Wonderful !

    vrtlarica, I have a few green kohlrabi in the garden still, but they were transplanted a while back which really slowed them down, maybe permanently? The beans surpassed my expectations this year, I'm really happy with them.

    villager, it turned out to be a tasty combo. I've always liked cabbage with apples and other fruit and the kohlrabi has a somewhat cabbagey flavor so I gave it a try. I think I'll try some raisins next time. I haven't cooked any of the kohlrabi yet but I'm going to look for some recipes.

    miss m, the kohlrabi is pretty. I'm braising some of the leaves tonight with a bit of broccoli, a lot of green garlic, and some fava beans. I'm going to serve it all in it's broth on toast with poached eggs on top.

    A Kitchen Garden... - Yes, at least 100 pounds, that was a surprise. I'm glad you like the new look. I'm going to tweak it a bit more, but I'm pretty happy with it.

  9. Oh wow! What happened? I like your new layout. You're giving me motivation to change mine.

    100 lbs of faves from 39 plants? That's amazing! Unfortunately, I only have 7 viable fava plants remaining. I wish I had sown more seeds earlier this spring as germination was pretty poor. Oh well, there's always next year.

  10. Kholrabi seems to be the flavour of the week and those are really nice ones for sure. I haven't grown them for awhile but I think it's because I have too much kale and not enough kholrabi recipes.
