Harvest Monday - July 11, 2011

It's time to catch up on my harvest posts for the last three weeks.

Sweetie Baby Romaine lettuce is back and living up to its name. It remained sweet and crisp in spite of a few days of 80º + temperatures and even a 94º day last week. Our nighttime temperatures at this time of year are generally in the 50ºs, and even when daytime temperatures exceed 90º the nighttime lows rarely exceed the mid-60ºs, so I'm sure that that helps to keep the lettuces from getting bitter. The Sweetie Baby Romaine seems to be exceptionally resistant to becoming bitter even when it starts to bolt, it has become my favorite romaine lettuce.

The one good head of Hybrid One Kilo napa cabbage more than lived up to its name coming in at 1.5 kilos. I think that I planted my main planting of napa cabbages too close together so they are all very small and not really heading up. The chickens have been enjoying those tiny blowzy "heads". And I managed to harvest most of the remaining heads of radicchio before they bolted - just one of them managed to shoot up a flower stalk before I noticed.

The last of the beets came out to make room for some eggplants. Here's the last of the Renee's Golden and the Chioggia beets.

And these were the only Devoy beets that survived my seed starting efforts. The Devoy seeds produce a few white beets every time I grow them. I think that I would get better shaped roots from the Devoy beets if I sowed the seeds directly in the ground, starting them in paper pots seems to produce forked roots since it inhibits them from sending down a nice tap root. The Golden and Chioggia beets do ok with the paper pot starts since they produce nice small ball shaped roots rather than the large pointed tapered roots of the Devoys.

The rest of the harvests pretty much finished off the spring vegetables and now I'm waiting for the summer plantings to start producing. The first of the much anticipated Pimento de Padron peppers have kicked off the summer vegetable harvests which you can read about in my post from yesterday.

  2. I will have to try the Pimento de Padron peppers. Where do you get the seeds?

I am sorry to read of all your rat troubles. Apparently life in California is not as idyllic as I fantasized.

  4. I am hoping for some fall Napa cabbage here. I planted a 'miniature' variety named Soloist. I think the smaller ones are more useful in the kitchen, at least for me. Sweetie Baby sounds like a keeper lettuce. I will have to add it to my summer plantings next year.

  5. I could use a lettuce that can stand the heat. This seems to be the second summer in a row that is hotter than normal. Last year was worse, but this is stacking up to be a hot one.

    Your cabbage looks beautiful.

  6. Nice harvest, the Napa cabbage looks beautiful, I cannot grow spring Napa here, it's too hot, the leaves won't wrap and head up, no problem in the fall though.

  7. That napa cabbage is a beauty. Your Renee's Golden and Chiogga beets look really nice too.

  8. Beautiful harvest as always. I have found that the romaine lettuce tolerates the heat very well. I picked the last 4 heads this past week and they were great! We have had extremely hot weather and they still tasted good.

I planted pimento peppers for the first time this year. They are absolutely huge. I thought that they would be a small pepper. I guess that I was wrong.

  9. Why can't I get my napa cabbages to look that good??! I'm guessing you don't have slugs in your garden.

Oh, yes, Tasty Jade is a Japanese variety. Very good in my opinion!

And your beets look wonderful by the way.
